Remote Support and Work!

Hey everyone! The corona virus has everyone up in arms and a lot of businesses are starting to look at work from home. This is a HUGE step in work-home life culture, and it can provide a lot of amazing benefits. But it can also provide a lot of hurdles that need to be overcome.

There are several options as far as remote software goes, each have their own benefits and disadvantages.

1. RDP – Windows Remote Desktop

This software is preinstalled on every windows computer since Windows XP in 2001. A great free tool that is easy to use and provides you with real time active display of your remote workstation or computer, yet if improperly setup can be VERY vulnerable to attacks.

2. TeamViewer

TeamViewer offers a free service for consumers not using this software for business, and a business class software starting at around $25 per user per month. An easy to use and install tool from a formerly trusted source. In recent years though, TeamViewer has had several attacks and vulnerabilities discovered within their base software. Not my first choice, but still a good alternative.

3. LogMeIn

LogMeIn has been around for years, and some of you may remember them under their old name of LogMeIn Hamachi (still around though basically in Legacy format.) This software has a free trial version, but you have to eventually pay for the full software. Starting at $349.99 per year, this software comes in right at about $15 per month per computer. The software has had a few attacks on it, yet seems to show more resilience than others mentioned above.

4. ScreenConnect/ConnectWise

No free versions here, and you pay per user at $25 a month. With as many tools as the above listed, plus a few extras, this software is the one we at Techneighbors recommend and use for our customers security. Although they have been several attempts, there have been fewer breaches with this software than the others listed above. However, you will be paying for the security.

At the end of the day, though there are more options than just those listed above, these are the more commonly used remote software options used by major companies and individuals. We personally recommend ConnectWise or LogMeIn unless you have access to a private VPN*. Which ever direction you or your company head in, we appreciate companies taking steps to prevent the spreading of Corona.
